SUMMARY
Myriah worked at Press Pass NYC as a Student Newspaper Editor Bootcamp Project Fellow where she collaborated with the Press Pass Student Advisory Committee and partner organizations in the design, development and implementation of a pilot one-week Student Editor Bootcamp that was launched in early August. The goal of the Student Editor Bootcamp is to prepare high school students to assume leadership roles on their school newspaper staff, in hopes of creating and sustaining student newspaper programs in NYC.
OVERVIEW
Attended conferences to promote the Bootcamp and recruit professionals, volunteers and other mission-aligned organizations
Provided recommendations on different ways to engage students throughout the Bootcamp
Finalized program structure and speakers for the Bootcamp
Implemented a “Lunch Chat” series with professionals and outside organizations to offer students different perspectives within journalism
Surveyed facilitators, participants and students on their Bootcamp experience
IMPACT
17 of the nominated 25 students attended the pilot Student Newspaper Editor Boot Camp from 14 different public schools, in collaboration with 4 other mission-aligned organizations.
Myriah offers recommendations to the social sector to bridge social opportunity gaps that are prevalent in NYC.
