What does FLIA mean to you?

"FLIA was essential to giving me the tools and confidence I needed to pursue a career in the social sector. Through my cohort and Kirsten’s support, and the training and dedicated provided by my partner organization, I was able to meaningfully engage with a non-profit whose mission was important to me. I was also able to further hone the skills necessary to work in the social sector, including managing a project and overseeing its completion."

Describe your career path. How did your fellowship with FLIA prepare you for this role?

"In college I worked at a social justice education where I developed and facilitated anti-oppression and responsible community engagement workshops. I also volunteered at neighborhood public schools and with immigrant rights community organizations. After graduation, I conducted Know Your Rights trainings at NYC-based social services organization.

I realized that I was really interested in the legal field, but I wanted to gain more exposure to youth development and programming for disadvantaged youth, in the hopes of attaining a career at the intersection of law, education, immigrant rights, and youth development. My fellowship with Future Leaders in Action was incredibly helpful to gaining the experience I wanted. I worked alongside Fiver Children Foundation’s staff, partners, and youth and family participants to develop improved program outreach processes.

I now work as a paralegal with Children’s Rights, a national organization that holds the government accountable for keeping kids safe and healthy through legal action and strategic advocacy. My experience working with youth at Fiver and managing an outreach project has helped me through the early stages of my career and my job with Children’s Rights. I am incredibly grateful to have completed a fellowship with Future Leaders in Action as it helped me better understand what kind of career in the social sector I wanted to have!"
