Family Law Continuing Education Fellow - Iowa Center for Children’s Justice

Location: Des Moines, IA (in-person)

Dates: May 23 - August 12, 2022

Compensation: $600/week stipend

COVID-19 Note:

Due to COVID-19, as a fellow you will work in-person, with some work from home available. If in-person, ICCJ asks staff to wear a mask. FLIA and ICCJ may move the fellowship entirely remote if there is a spike in cases. 

Future Leaders in Action Overview:

Future Leaders in Action (FLIA) cultivates leaders and strengthens youth-oriented nonprofits through a fellowship program. Fellows, individuals interested in entering the social sector, work on-site full-time at a partner nonprofit to develop or implement a pre-determined enrichment program. 

Throughout the fellowship, fellows gain various professional skills including time-management, communication, program development, in a fast-paced, hands-on learning environment.

 

ICCJ Overview:

Iowa Center for Children’s Justice (ICCJ) elevates children’s views in custody matters and promotes child-focused solutions through legal representation, education and alternative dispute resolution. ICCJ provides legal representation for children to listen, support and advocate for child-focused resolutions in high-conflict custody cases. They provide divorce workshops for children. Additionally, ICCJ provides alternative dispute resolution including child-focused mediation. 

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

You will …

  • Design a series of education programs for lawyers and other family court personnel such as judges, lawyers, and mental health professionals on issues that deeply affect children in family disputes including child refusal of contact with a parent, divorce as an adverse childhood experience, the effect of substance use on families and children and the effects of domestic violence and coercive control on children to support a child-focused approach to understanding and resolving family law programs

  • Actively participate in weekly FLIA professional development responsibilities including check-in calls and virtual weekly leadership workshops

  • Attend virtual leadership training retreat and in-person gatherings with local fellows 

By the end of the fellowship, you will have … 

  • Completed one or more continued education event(s) which would require the following: 

    • developing an outline and presentation

    • identifying and confirming speakers

    • establishing venue/date/time 

    • creating and implementing an evaluation tool to assess the quality and effectiveness of the program  

  • Written two blog articles for FLIA 

  • Completed a final report and video about the fellowship
